For Wildlife Enthusiasts
Plettenberg Bay is well known for its long, sandy Blue Flag Beaches and outdoor pursuits, to name a few. Here, one can go whale watching and dolphin watching, swim with the seals and enjoy a plethora of other watersports too. If you are more of a landlubber, then wind your way along the local wine route or hike along one of the many trails in the area – not to mention the magnificent Robberg Reserve. There are many golf course along the Garden Route, so take your pick and putter along for a day out in the sunshine, chasing birdies, bogies and the call of the 19th hole. Take the family to experience one of the many animal attractions in the area and see how these animals are rehabilitated and protected. After a full day’s activities, wind down and relax at one of the many excellent restaurants in and around the town, or enjoy some local music with your friends at one of the nightspots.
Tenikwa
Tenikwa is the wildlife rehabilitation centre that accepts injured and abandoned wildlife from all over The Garden Route, caring for them until they are able to return to the wild where they belong. Tenikwa offers a 1 hour guided tour called The Wildcat Experience; a family-orientated program called The EcoKidz Family Challenge; a leisurely Private Tour; and a full-day exclusive experience called the Cats In Conservation.
Raptor Rescue Plett
Raptor Rescue Plett is a Bird of Prey Rehabilitation and Awareness Centre. We service the conservation needs of the area by provinding care for sick and injured birds as well as a sanctaury for orphaned and non-releasable birds. Our aim is to give the public a window into the work we do, and to raise awareness through our educational guided tours and flying demonstrations. Our tours take place in a tranquil forest setting and are approximately and hour long in duration.
Whale Watching
Plettenberg Bay is renowned for its Whale Watching. During our whale season (July to December), enjoy awe inspiring close encounter experiences with Southern Right whales and Humpback whales – this experience is nothing short of spectacular. Sightings all year round include Common, Humpback and Bottlenose dolphins; Brydes whales; various sharks; Cape fur seals and pelagic birds among other surprises.
Lawnwood Snake Sanctuary
Lawnwood is an animal and child friendly place, besides the variety of reptiles, there are also farm animals and a moody pot-bellied pig. Set in the indigenous forest, be sure to keep your eyes out for birds and forest animals.
Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve
This hidden gem is home to over 150 different species of game and birdlife. It is the Southern Cape’s biggest game reserve and is home to Africa’s Big 5. Choose between a horse-back safari or a 2 hour game drive in an open vehicle to interact closely with the wildlife. It is only a 15 minute drive from Plettenberg Bay.
Monkeyland
Monkeyland, just outside Plettenberg Bay, is the world’s first free-roaming multi-species primate sanctuary. Over the course of our tours- which we call “Monkey safaris” you’ll be able to see over 550 primates including Capuchin Monkeys, Ring-tailed and Black and White Lemurs, Gibbons and Howler Monkeys, to name a few.
Birds of Eden
Birds of Eden’s unique two-hectare dome (the world’s largest) spans over a gorge of indigenous forest. Currently it is home to over 3,500 birds from over 220 species, with the main focus being African birds. Visits to Birds of Eden are usually self-guided, however guided walks are offered on request.

Africanyon

Distance: The trail is 5 days and 4 nights.The Otter Hiking Trail is one of South Africa’s most popular trails and is famed for its scenic beauty. It begins at the Storms River Mouth Rest Camp and stretches westward as far as the Groot River estuary at Nature’s Valley. Overnight accommodation is provided in four beautifully appointed overnight camps. The trail features ravines and rivers, mountains and forests, with abundant birdlife and wildlife along the way. - Harkerville Hiking Trail
Distance: The trail is 2 days. Day 1- 14.6k.m Day 2 – 12kmThe start point is about 1km off the N2, between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay. You can spend the first night in the Harkerville Hut. For the really tough hiker, Harkerville Hut is the ending place of the Outeniqua Trail and, although they are separate trails, they can be combined to form a 9-night trail. The terrain is rough and there are some steep, slippery rocks, inching along narrow exposed ledges.: The route is not for the faint hearted.
